Concrete Acid Stain

Concrete Acid Stain is a unique product in the Australian decorative flooring industry. Made with ethanol, they are the only stain on the market that are NOT made with hydrochloric acid. This intern makes them safer to use with no dangerous fumes …!

Even though our Concrete Acid Stain is different in formulation from others, they still provide exactly the same marbled look and a natural finish. As they are formulated differently, they have the added benefit in that they do not produce as much residue, eliminating the need for neutralising.

Turn old concrete into a work of art, or take your new concrete project to a new level with Concrete Acid Stains. Our Stains will provide you with one of the most unique looks in the decorative concrete industry. They may be applied to new or existing concrete, stamped concrete, decorative overlays and virtually any cementitious substrate.

A Concrete Acid Stain will dramatically change the look of the concrete surface; acid stains are designed to make your current concrete flooring more aesthetically pleasing. Con-Treat supply high quality concrete stains that will change the appearance of your surface by creating unique colours and patterns on your concrete floor.

To bring out the best colours in your stain, it is advisable to seal the stain with one of our suggested solvent based products below.

*Hints:

  • The colour in the bottle is not the the final colour of the stain once applied.
  • Allow 24hours after application and then pour a little water on the stain to see the true colour once sealed.
  • The salts in the stain can solidify in colder weather and storage. It is always a good idea to warm the bottle in some warm water to dissolve the salts back into the product and then shake vigorously before application.
  • The colour of the final product is 100% to do with the amount of lime in the concrete, not the colour of the stain in the bottle. The more lime in the concrete, the stronger the colour.
  • The stain will come to life once it has been sealed with a solvent based sealer as suggested above.

Can I add a second coat?

If the stain shade is too light, a second coat can be applied without removing the residue between stain applications. However the final result will depend on the lime content of the concrete. Stains may be layered wet or dry. Test the application techniques before doing the larger area.

What is the m2 coverage of the stain per ltr?

You will generally achieve approx 5m2 per ltr if used neat. The stains however can be diluted up to 75% with water. This will allow up to 15-20m2 per ltr, however the more you dilute the stain the weaker the colour becomes.

Will the acid stain look exactly the same as the colour on the web site?

No, dilution and lime content will affect the colour. Always do a test patch first.

How old does the concrete need to be before applying acid stains?

The concrete needs to be a minimum of 14 days old before applying acid stains.

Can I use a metal spray bottle to apply the acid stain?

No, you MUST use plastic spray bottles.

Can I use hydrochloric acid to wash the concrete prior to using acid stains?

No, acid washing will deplete the lime that is required for the stains reaction in the concrete.

What is the best way to prepare the surface of the concrete?

Sanding with 80# sand paper or high pressure cleaning. A clean porous surface is required. DO NOT use hydrochloric acid or acid etching to prepare the concrete.

If using Moisture Proof, should it be applied before using the Acid Stain?

No, all Acid Staining should be done prior to applying Moisture Proof.

Can Acid Stain be used on a polymer based levelling compound?

No, there is generally an insufficient lime content for a reaction to occur, however they can be used on a cementious overlay that doesn’t contain polymers.

Does the stain need to be sealed after application?

If you are looking for a very weak and natural colour (maybe for fake concrete rocks or similar) then it is not necessary to seal the stain. If however you are after a vibrant colour and want the true colour of the stain to come out then it is necessary to seal it with a solvent based sealer like Hard Seal or Stone Seal for outdoors or Fortis 519 Polyurethane for interior applications.

Can Fortis Enhancer or Wet Look penetrating sealer be applied over Acid Stains?

Yes they both can, however the Wet Look in particular will give the best result.
