When buying a concrete grinder, it’s important to make sure you purchase the right equipment to suit your needs. Three things that are important to consider are your project size, speed and machine portability.
Project size
The general rule of thumb here is the larger your project, the larger you want your machine to be. This is because the larger machines can grind a greater m2 area per day so are more suited to the job at hand.
Too often I see people trying to save money by investing in a cheaper machine only for the job to end up taking twice as long, resulting in them losing a lot more money, a lot more than they originally saved by buying the cheaper machine.
Often, people will use a smaller machine not realising that the larger machines will cover a much larger area in the same amount of time.
These larger machines are wider, have larger diamond wheels and more of them. Make sure you get the machine that matches the size of the projects you’re working on so you don’t waste time and energy.
Project Speed
It’s important that you balance the efficiency of your machine with the size and type of projects you’re working on.
If speed of job completion is important to you then it’s worth investing in a larger machine. They have a larger cutting diameter with larger diamond wheels and more of them.
This enables them to cover much larger areas, saving you time and letting you get on to your next project quicker while earning you more money.
I often come across people who use hand grinders to prepare a whole floor. This takes at least twice as long as using an upright grinder, and not only that, you’re on your hands and knees grinding with the potential of doing yourself an injury.
Make sure you invest wisely in the right machine at the start to save you time and money
Machine Portability
One important thing that’s often missed is that you need to consider how you’ll be transporting the machine from project to project.
Obviously, the higher up the range you go the bigger and heavier the machine is. There’s no point getting a larger machine if you’re unable to transport it to the site.
The smaller Meteor 250 or Satellite 380 machines are light enough to be loaded into a vehicle including a standard car. The arms fold in on themselves and they weigh only around 50 to 70kg.
But at the top of the range, these machines can weigh 800kgs and be 760mm wide, so you have to be prepared with your type of transport.
Another thing to consider is the width of the machine & whether or not it will fit through standard doorways. The smaller machines up to the 650mm diameter are most commonly used for domestic purposes as they will fit, once you go larger than this, door width needs to be considered.
