What concrete sealer is suitable for your customer and their budget?

As we’ve discussed before concrete sealers are a small investment when you consider the time and money that you can waste by having to re-lay or repair surfaces due to inadequate protection.

They can also be a viable alternative to tiles & other coverings without breaking the bank. A concrete sealer protects the aesthetic appeal of your floor by preventing contamination, abrasion, cracking, efflorescence leaching and much more. It’s really important that you use the right sealer for your project.

Previously we focused on what you need to consider if the concrete is inside or outside & the importance of selecting UV or non UV stable sealers. This time we’re focusing on the different finishes your clients might want whilst also keeping in line with their budget.

What sort of finish is your client after?

There are many options for your client to choose from but you can help to narrow it down by asking the right questions. Is it an indoor or outdoor area? Does it need to be non-slip? What would they like it to look like? Do they want to see the sealer, do they like the wet look? Or are they wanting an invisible sealer that doesn’t change the aesthetics?

If they want to create shine, what level of gloss do they prefer – matte, satin or high gloss? Do they want to use colour? Texture? Does the surface have exposed aggregate? Ensuring you are asking the right questions will assist your client in selecting the sealer that best suits their purpose.

The other important point to address is budget & of course ongoing maintenance.

What’s your customer’s budget?

The main factors in selecting the right sealer are aesthetics, longevity, maintenance and of course your client’s budget. Generally speaking, water-based sealers aren’t as durable as solvent-based sealers therefore they will require resealing sooner than solvent-based sealers, this cost needs to be considered.

Most epoxies will scratch easier than polyurethane sealers and whilst the upfront cost is very similar the epoxy will require recoating sooner so maintenance can be a higher cost. Epoxies can give you 3D depth when you look into the floor, especially when using colour or metallics and if this is a look you are wanting to achieve it can be suggested to your client to use clear polyurethane over the epoxy as the final coat for added protection and shine. This will of course add to the budget but will give a beautiful finish.

Flake chips or quartz can also be used for a decorative finish, this too will affect the budget as there will be product cost & labour costs for this extra step.

As you can see there are many variables & we have only covered a few but we hope you found this useful in helping you guide your clients to select the correct sealer for their project.
